BlackBerry 9000 surfaces?

Who knows at this point, honestly. From our own mock-up, to many other ones online, it’s going to take a lot to convince us. That said friends, this does look pretty legit if it turns out to be true. We’ll let you all debate whether you like or not. Is that a touch screen on there? Nope, don’t think so!

P.S. See that silver / chrome bezel around the device? We’ve heard it is actually aluminium! Aluminium is a go for the BlackBerry 9000! Also note the external microSD slot on the left side

iPhone prepares to lock horns with BlackBerry

iphone and blackberryFinally, Apple has blown the trumpet of war with BlackBerry. The revelation came in the form of its announcement of the forthcoming iPhone software update. To realize its dream of winning the hearts of business people and dethroning BlackBerry devices, Apple has even teamed up with Microsoft to increase the iPhone’s email capabilities.

Now, that means a clear and open war is in the offing. Currently, Apple’s iPhone enjoys the second position with a 21 per cent share of the US smartphone market, whereas RIM’s BlackBerry is on the top with 41 per cent market-share. The new update is aimed at creating a new and extended base for the iPhone. The software update will allow iPhones to receive email, contact and calendar information from business computer networks that use Microsoft’s popular Office Exchange system. Moreover, the update even promises to provide secure wireless connections to business computing networks by allowing the owners to remotely wipe all data from devices lost or stolen.

The idea sounds pretty cool, but we’ll have to wait till June to get the real picture. No doubt Apple is hellbent on dethroning BlackBerry, but then, BlackBerry is famous for its surprise packages.

Similar to existing BlackBerry smartphone cases in the OtterBox Defender Series line, the OtterBox 1936 case offers three layers to safeguard the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 and BlackBerry Pearl 8130 from bumps, scratches and drops.

Blackberry 9000 in the flesh?

If the device in the image below is in fact the real Blackberry 9000, there are going to be a lot of disappointed Blackberry owners or would be owners. Overall appearance shows that it is slimmed down a lot. The screen does look bigger than current models, and then again that could just be my imagination.

Three big changes I noticed by looking at the image; this device is now using the micros-USB instead of the mini USB, silver / chrome bezel added to the bezel and an external microSD slot on the left side.

Well there you have it. Anyone disappointed?

Blackberry 6750

The last model still in production in the Blackberry 6700 series, the Blackberry 6750 is actually a solid useful PDA and cell phone in one. It features many of the trademark Blackberry abilities.

As with many other Blackberry PDA's the Blackberry 6750 supports Wireless Email, corporate data access, synchronized organizer and calendar, SMS and wireless internet browsing. At 5.06oz (143gr) it is only slightly heavier than newer models.

The 6750 also has the backlit easy-to-use full QWERTY keyboard and the thumb-operated trackwheel for fast navigation. The relative smaller memory size, at 2MB SRAM and a 10 MB flash memory, shouldn't be in the way of most users either.

The most visible drawback with the Blackberry 6750 is the monochromatic display. Once you get used to the colorful display of the newer models it can be hard to work in monochrome again. IT also needs its own docking cradle to synchronize with other systems, having neither blue tooth abilities, nor a USB interface.

If you need a Blackberry work horse for a low price, and don't require synchronizations with other networks, a second hand Blackberry 6750 may be a good solution for you.

Blackberry 7230 Review

One of the Blackberry 7200 series PDA's, the Blackberry 7230 device boasts the same elegant design. Like its 7200 counterparts, it comes with corporate data access, wireless email access, connected organizer and more, making it a great tool for any business person. It's also voice operated, so you don't have to use your fingers too often. But when you, do there's a comfortable full QWERTY keyboard available.

The Blackberry 7230 model features the same clear display with 65,000 colors spread over a high resolution 240x160 screen. The screen is backlit for easy use during all times of day and night.

The Blackberry 7230 is is compatible only with 1900MHz GSM/GPRS networks in North America (and not with 850 MHz GSM/GPRS networks). This makes little difference to the average user, other than limiting the choice of operators to Cingular and T-Mobile. However, the Blackberry 7230 is compatible with the European and Asia Pacific networks at both 900Mhz and 1800Mhz, making it very good for the traveling business person.

The long battery life is also a great feature for the business person. The Blackberry 7230 battery can last for up to 10 days in standby mode, or 5 hours of talk time - that's the top of the scale at the Blackberry 7200 series.

The Blackberry 7230 is usually cheaper than the other PDA's in the 7200 line. That's largely due to its limited internal memory. With only 16 MB in its Flash memory and 2MB of SRAM, it belongs to the low-scale of the 7200 as far as memory is concerned.

Blackberry 7250 Review

The Blackberry 7250 is another sleek beauty of the 7200 series. Use this PDA for all your internet, email and PDA applications and let it automatically synchronize your applications with your office systems.

The Blackberry 7250 is similar to the 7290 model, with a large 4 MB SRAM memory and 32 MB of flash memory. This makes this a good device for storing relatively large amounts of data. Like the other models in the 7200 series, it has a great 65,000 colors 240x160 display and a convenient 33 key PC-like QWERTY keyboard for easy typing. Browsing and navigating the Blackberry 7250 is made easier with built-in trackwheel, or you can simply "talk" to your Blackberry - the 7250 is voice enabled with and has wireless Bluetooth support.

The Blackberry 7250 is very similar to the 7290 model, with a large 4 MB SRAM memory.

This model does have the shortest battery life of all 7200 Blackberry models, with only 3.3 hours of talk time (up to 8 days or 192 hours when in standby mode), but unless you're relying on it for long business trip, this is not necessarily a main issue, as the other 7200 models only have up to 5 battery life hours of talk time and up to 10 days of standby mode.

The main difference between the Blackberry 7250 and other 7200 models, lies with its supported wireless network. This is the only 7200 model compatible with 800/1900 MHz CDMA2000 1X networks. It is offered by ALLTEL, Earthlink Wireless and Verizon Wireless in the USA, and by Bell in Canada. This is not the right Blackberry for you if you travel overseas frequently and need a migrating cell phone, as the Blackberry 7250 is not supported by any networks outside North America.

Blackberry 7280 Review

The Blackberry 7280 is another model in the Blackberry 7200 series. Like the other 7200 models, it's perfectly connected online allowing you to passively retrieve your emails and stay online. Wireless email and Internet, access to corporate data bases and always synchronized calendar, are just some of the Blackberry trademarks available in the 7280.

Like other 7200 models, the 7280 has a backlit 240x160 display with over 65,000 colors and a handy 33 key PC-like QWERTY keyboard. Easy navigation between menus is available with the known Blackberry trackwheel. It is also voice activated, allowing you to quickly operate many of the applications without ever using the keyboard or trackwheel.

Like the 7230, the Blackberry 7280 comes with a 2 MB SRAM memory as well as a 16 MB flash memory. It also has the same long battery life with up to 5 hours of battery life in talking time or up to 240 hours of battery life in standby mode.

The main difference between the Blackberry 7280 and the 7230 models, is the different supported wireless network. The Blackberry 7280 works with 850 MHz and 1900MHz GSM/GPRS networks in North America and 1800MHz GSM/GPRS networks in Europe/Asia Pacific.

Blackberry 7290 Review

The Blackberry 7290, one of the Blackberry 7200 series PDA's, is a beautiful elegant PDA with a built-in GSM cell phone (suitable for roaming between North America, Europe and Asia Pacific).

This cool PDA is voice enabled and has Bluetooth® support for hands-free voice communications. If you prefer to use your fingers, a 33 key PC-like QWERTY keyboard is all there for you. It features the known Blackberry trackwheel so you can easily and quickly navigate between menus on its display screen.

Speaking of the screen, the Blackberry 7290 has a backlit sharp 240x160 with over 65,000 colors display. Great for any application you need. And it supports many applications with a solid Java™ platform. The built-in email client can open standard attachments for you, so you don't have to install any additional software to read your emails.

The RIM BlackBerry 7290's lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4 hours of digital talk time, and up to 9 days of digital standby time. That's actually not as long as other Blackberry 7200 models with the Blackberry 7230 and Blackberry 7280 having slightly longer battery life. However, it does have more memory, double than that of the 7230 and 7280, with 32 MB of Flash memory and 4MB of SRAM, more than making up for the slightly shorter battery life.

Choosing Your Blackberry PDA

RIM offers you a choice of over a dozen models of Blackberry. With so many neat looking devices, how can you tell which is the right Blackberry for you?

If you like the concept of the PDA and cell-phone in one, then a Blackberry is definitely the thing for you. You do need to decide whether your main focus lies with cell-phone functions or with PDA functions. In other words, would you use your Blackberry mainly to talk with, or to type and view the screen with (handheld applications)?

If you’re a Cell-Phone Addict

If you’re looking for a cell-phone that is as powerful as a PDA, but easy to hold and talk with, then the Blackberry 7100 line is for you. With three variations, the 7100g, 7100r and 7100t, you have three designs to choose from, all of which featuring the great Blackberry 7100 business cell phone solutions.

All of the Blackberry 7100 models are first and foremost cell phones. They are sleek and slim and easy to carry around and talk with.

Of course, the 7100’s shape also means a narrower screen and a smaller keyboard… RIM’s engineers have managed to overcome this obstacle to some degree, by having each key share two letters. In addition, RIM’s intelligent SureType technology tries to guess what you’re about to type, to minimize the use of keys. At the same time, the screen of the Blackberry 7100 is much larger than that of the average cell-phone.

If you’re a PDA heavy user

The various Blackberry models, other than the 7100, are essentially all PDA’s with built-in cell phone abilities. That means they all have the Blackberry large, high-resolution screen providing you with lots of workspace to browse the net, read documents or view photographs with. They also feature the Blackberry full QWERTY keyboard for the best ease of work with any application.

You don’t have to hold your Blackberry PDA to your ear to use it as cell phone. Every Blackberry device comes with a hands-free headset, so you won’t have to feel awkward holding a small PDA next to your head.

The Blackberry PDA’s come in a large range of models with a variety of designs. If you’re looking for the coolest and best connected PDA with a built-in cell phone – the Blackberry PDA is for you!

Blackberry 8700 Review

The Blackberry 8700 has two slightly different designs, depending on which model you'll get, the Cingular or the T-mobile. Either way, the 8700 brings you some really cool features.
In terms of product design, the BlackBerry 8700 is a still a wide device, but lighter and thinner than BlackBerry devices of the past. With the handy trackwheel on the right side, and the famous, easy to use, full QWERTY keypad, it provides for great usability while being thinner and lighter. The screen is bigger and brighter than before with a 320 x 240 resolution and LCD display. This screen is easy to look at, no matter what time of day or night, as it senses the light level and balances the display accordingly.
If you owned a Blackberry before, you'll be right at home. The same great user interface is still here. Everything is placed just right, and finding the various features is almost intuitive.
The Blackberry 8700 is a great cell phone. It has a built-in speaker and a speed dial feature - perfect for those pressed in time business calls on the road. You personalize your ringtone, using any MP3 track you like. You can easily tell which ringing phone is yours, no matter where you travel with your Blackberry PDA (and it can travel indeed, with global roaming in hundreds of countries all over the globe).
It's not just voice calls either! You can easily send out emails and SMS messages to anyone on your contact list. The built-in email client allows you to manage up to 10 email accounts, and synched with your desktop computer, everything is easily accessible at all times. You can read your emails on the road – no need to actively retrieve it either, the Blackberry is always online and lets you know when a new email is in. You can even read attachments such as Word and Excel documents on the road using the Blackberry PDA qualities. It's not just emails either. Use your Blackberry to keep in touch with your IM buddies too!
The Blackberry 8700 comes with a built in organizer, including your contact book, task list and calendar. The blue-tooth feature makes sure your desktop applications and your Blackberry are always on the same page! If your company uses the Blackberry Enterprise Server, you can be in synch with company data as well.
This lightweight gadget is easy to carry around, as it weighs only 4.7 ounces and measures 4.3 x 2.7 x 0.8 inches. It comes with a powerful battery that should last you up to 4 hours of digital talk time, and up to 16 days of digital standby time.

Blackberry 7100 Review

In a nutshell - The BlackBerry 7100 models are fully-featured mobile phones combined with the power of the BlackBerry PDA. This phone sized wonder, comes loaded with all of the cool features you want: integrated Bluetooth connectivity, speakerphone, downloadable ringtones and more!

RIM offers three models in the Blackberry 7100: BlackBerry 7100g™, BlackBerry 7100r™ and BlackBerry 7100t™. With slightly different looks and some feature variation, the Blackberry 7100 models are the Blackberry cell phone line. They are first and foremost cell phones, slimmer in design and a handset adapted for phone usage.

RIM engineers have actually managed to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keypad shares two letters but typing is still easy as the BlackBerry 7100's automatically determine which letter is the intended one based on what it predict you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, is what makes the 7100 models' compact size a reality. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.

All Blackberry 7100 models come with built-in Bluetooth capability, so you can use a wireless headset (or for a regular headset, use the build-in jack). These mobile phones also have vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book.

With phone functions being on the front of the stage, the 7100 still deliver the legendary Blackberry email and internet experience. With Blackberry's push technology, you don't need to retrieve your email. Instead, Blackberry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be notified as new email arrives.

Use the Blackberry 7100 to seamlessly connect either to your work network (if you have Blackberry Enterprise Server installed) or to the internet. With your office network, your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and Blackberry device calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized instantaneously with your desktop. Users without Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop software.

Or just use the Blackberry 7100's internet browser to get online. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports and more. The unit supports AOL, Yahoo and ICQ instant messaging, as well as SMS text messaging. MMS messages can be received and forwarded.

So what about the different 7100 models?

Actually, all three Blackberry 7100 models support the same great features. The difference lies in the design alone. The Blackberry 7100g model is slightly slimmer and longer than the Blackberry 7100t and the Blackberry 7100r, so basically it's down to style and personal preference.
